    Kohara Bonji

    Senior researcher at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation specializing in contemporary Chinese politics (diplomacy and security) and Japanese security policy. Born in 1963. Graduated from the National Defense Academy of Japan, then earned a master’s degree in regional studies at the University of Tsukuba. In 1985, after joining the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, he worked as a helicopter pilot. He has worked as Japanese defense attaché in China; an information group leader for the Ministry of Defense Maritime Staff Office; and commander of the 21st Air Corps. After retiring from the MSDF, he worked for the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research before joining the SPF in 2017. His writings include Chūgoku no gunji senryaku(China’s Military Strategy).
