On Saturday, July 27, the skies above the Sumida River in eastern Tokyo came alive with the bright flashes and booming sounds of the annual Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival, a major event on the capital's summer schedule. Strong winds remained from Typhoon Nari, downgraded to a tropical depression, but the storm's rains did not threaten the festival's launches. Some 20,000 fireworks were launched above the river, thrilling the spectators on hand to enjoy this traditional summertime show. (Video © Jiji Press)
