    Ueno Makoto

    Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1960. Professor, Department of Japanese Literature, Kokugakuin University, where he earned his PhD; professor emeritus at Nara University. Writing from the perspective of the cultural theory of its era, Ueno has introduced new ways of reading the Man’yōshū, applying research methods from fields such as historiography, folkloristics, and archaeology. His books include Tamashii no kodaigaku—Toitsuzukeru Orikuchi Shinobu (A Paleology of the Soul: The Case of Orikuchi Shinobu), Man’yō banka no kokoro—Yume to shi no kodaigaku (The Heart of Man’yō Elegies: A Paleology of Dreams and Death), and Man’yō bunkaron (A Theory of Man’yō Culture). He is now widely regarded as one of Japan’s leading Man’yōshū-era scholars, and his writings have garnered much popular attention and discussion. He has also staged an opera based on the Man’yōshū.
