Literary and cultural historian. Professor emeritus at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies. Born in 1947. Graduated with a degree in French literature from the University of Tokyo in 1972. Received his doctorate for research on Kajii Motojirō in 1997. Works include Nihonjin no shizenkan (The Japanese View of Nature), Rekishi to seimei: Nishida Kitarō no kutō (History and Life: Nishida Kitarō’s Struggle), and Manshūkoku: Kōsaku suru nashonarizumu (Manchukuo: Intersecting Nationalisms).
