Abe Haruki

Graduated from Hokkaidō University with a degree in engineering in 1977. After further study in the United States, joined the Asahi Shimbun. Worked the crime and city politics beats in Yokohama and Sapporo before moving primarily to lifestyle, culture, and arts news coverage out of the paper’s Tokyo headquarters. Staffed the paper’s New York office from 1996 to 1999. In 2013–20, worked in Okayama and Shiga Prefectures as a senior regional reporter, handling regional and political reporting as well as election coverage. Since leaving the Asahi Shimbun, has remained active as a freelance reporter.
