Nippon.com Social Media Policy

1. Overview

The Nippon Communications Foundation (“the NCF”) publishes the website Nippon.com in seven languages: English, French, Spanish, Chinese (both simplified and traditional characters), Arabic, Russian, and Japanese. The NCF manages various social media accounts (“the Accounts”) in each of its languages, and has defined the following Social Media Policy to govern its use of the accounts.

2. Social Media Definitions

The NCF defines “social media” as all internet-based networking services used by individuals and organizations to communicate with audiences using or viewing those same services.

3. Purposes of Social Media Use

The NCF uses the Accounts to share accurate, easily understood information on Japan, primarily from the Nippon.com website, and to build fora for discussion of Japan-related topics with social media users, with the goals of enhancing mutual understanding in the international community and Japan’s global presence.

4. Basic Stance on Social Media Use

The NCF uses the Accounts in line with its Editorial Policy and Translation Policy. For more information on these, please see the “What We Do” page on the foundation website.

5. Information Shared on Social Media

The NCF uses the Accounts to share information including, but not limited to, the following.

  • Information on content posted to the website Nippon.com.
  • Information on the people or organizations featured on Nippon.com, or on the authors and translators producing its content.
  • Information on activities and events organized by the NCF.
  • Information on factual matters covered by, experienced, or investigated by the NCF’s staff.
  • Information originally provided by government or media organizations, with clearly labeled sources, deemed trustworthy and useful to users of the Accounts.
  • Views and opinions from managers, employees, and staff of the NCF.

6. Disclaimers

The NCF takes every precaution in its use of social media, based on the Editorial Policy, to maintain the accuracy of information thus provided, but the information shared on the Accounts does not represent the official views of the NCF. Official views from the NCF are shared on the foundation website or in official press releases from the NCF.

The NCF bears no responsibility for any issues arising with users accessing the Accounts, or for issues arising between users of the Accounts and third parties.

The NCF may at any time cease managing one or all of the Accounts, delete specific content posted to the Accounts, or delete the Accounts.

7. Notices on Interaction with the Accounts

If comments including, but not limited to, the following from users of social media services interacting with the Accounts are identified, the NCF may delete the comments, block the user accounts posting them, or take other appropriate actions with no prior warning, basing its decision on judgment of the context in which the comments were made.

  • Comments running counter to public order or morals, or infringing or encouraging infringement of such public order or morals.
