    Tōno Haruyuki

    Professor emeritus of Nara University and Osaka University. Visiting researcher at the Tokyo National Museum. Born in Hyōgo Prefecture in 1946. After completing his master’s degree in literature at Osaka City University, became a doctor of letters at the University of Tokyo. Specializes in ancient Japanese history and the study of historical materials. Previously worked as a researcher at the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties and a professor at Osaka University and Nara University. Member of the Japan Academy and Person of Cultural Merit. Has received the Medal of Honor (Purple Ribbon) and the Order of the Sacred Treasure. Works include Kentōshi (The Embassies to Tang China) and Shōtoku Taishi: Hontō no sugata o motomete (Seeking the Real Prince Shōtoku). Also published an annotated version of the ancient biographical work Jōgū Shōtoku hōō teisetsu (Traditions Concerning His Holiness, Prince Shōtoku).
