Medical doctor and medical economics journalist. Born in Yokohama in 1971. Studied economics at Hitotsubashi University and medicine at the University of Miyazaki. Specializes in comprehensive medicine, regional medicine, medical policymaking, and home healthcare. Worked at Yūbari City Clinic from 2009, following that city’s financial collapse in 2007. Was the clinic’s director in 2012–13. In 2020, opened Hirayama Clinic in Minamikyūshū, Kagoshima. Is also engaged in research and writing as the head of the Minami Nihon Health Research Lab. Writings include Hatan kara no kiseki: Ima Yūbari shimin kara manabu koto (From Financial Collapse to Miracle: Lessons from Yūbari’s Citizens), Nihon iryō no futsugō na shinjitsu (The Inconvenient Truth of Japan’s Medicine), and Urayamashii kodokushi (An Enviable Death, Alone, 2021).
