Folklorist and professor emeritus, Yamagata University. Born in 1953 in Osaka. Earned his master’s degree in geography and PhD in literature from Kyoto University. Was a professor, at Yamagata University prior to taking his current post. Specializes in cultural geography and folk religions, particularly the ascetic practices of the holy mountains of Dewa Sanzan. Notable works include Ezu to eizō ni miru sangaku shinkō (Mountain Worship in Pictures and Video) and Dewa Sanzan sangaku shinkō no kenkōzō (The Structure of Mountain Worship in Dewa Sanzan).
