Professor of human sciences at Waseda University. Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1959. Earned his doctorate in education at the University of Tokyo. Taught at Shizuoka University and Musashi University before taking up his current post. Specializes in sociology, social class studies, and labor sociology. Combines quantitative and qualitative data to analyze Japan’s recent class structure and its fluctuations. Also studies changes in the related fields of labor and mass culture. His books include Andākurasu 2030 (Underclass 2030) and Chūryū hōkai (The Disintegration of the Middle Classes).
