    Essayist and nonfiction writer. Born in Sendai in 1937. Travelled with his father to Chongin, North Korea, in 1942, and Xing’an (now Ulanhot, Inner Mongolia) two years later, but fled to Andong (now Dandong) after the Soviet Army invaded, eventually returning to Japan in January 1946. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, joined Jiji Press in 1962. Posted to Ottawa and Washington as a foreign correspondent from 1967, and after returning home covered the Bank of Japan, Keidanren, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being appointed chief commentator. Deputy BOJ Governor from 1998 until 2003. Works include Seibo byōin no yūjintachi (Friends at Seibo Hospital), which won the Japan Essayist’s Club Award, Manshū—Shōkokumin no senki (Manchuria: A Young Japanese Citizen’s War Tale), Rikōran: Watashi no hansei (trans. Fragrant Orchid: The Story of My Early Life), Manshū no kaze (Manchurian Wind), and Sugao no Nichigin fukusōsai nikki (The Real Deputy Governor of BOJ).
